Thorn wondered, as she skulked across the forest, if she had washed all the blood off. She had made the maiming quick, enough to incapacitate her brother, but she had prolonged his actual death, punctuating long periods of tense silence and pacing with an occasional snap at him, drawing more blood and more frightened screams and barks. The hardest part in her plan had been secluding him far enough away from their parents that there would be no one around to help him out. She would still kill him even if she had heard someone coming, but it would not have been as satisfying if there were only a quick throat rip. No, that had to be the final judgment. She didn't even make that one merciful, instead slow and painful like everything else.
Her question was answered, albeit indirectly, by her arrival upon a river. It was warm enough and the water was clean enough that she felt comfortable stepping in it, submerging herself for a few seconds at a time to let the clean and cool water run over her, washing away what remained of Orion. It was pleasant enough that Thorn let herself wade in it a few moments longer than she had to. She picked her head up to see Dahlia there in a tree. The bird dropped a pebble down on the bank closest to Thorn and let out a satisfied rawk.
"I guess you're sticking around after all," the shepherd said with a smile. She stepped out of the water and picked up the pebble, putting it in the small drawstring pouch she kept around. She thought of it much as an engagement ring, a promise from the crow to follow her to the ends of the earth, or at least what lay on the other side of the forest.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
