Lil Bit happily followed her nose, ignoring the creeping sense of hunger that sat in the pit of her stomach. It had been five days since she had first arrived in the city, and though she had ever been hungrier in her past, she would have been quick to admit that her current state was uncomfortable. Worse still was her inability to hunt. The rats and pigeons knew the urban environment far better than she did, and evaded all her attempts to hunt them down with ease. She looked no more talented than a clumsy pup learning how to use her feet for the first time. With her pride wounded, she stuck to scavenging, trying her best to keep a low profile and to not attract too much human attention.
Most of what she was able to find was mere scraps, rotted, or picked at by insects. None of it was particularly nutritious, but at least it was ripe with flavour. It was her only consolation, until she finally picked up on the smell of meat. The cattle dog had never been so far north, and she could see there was a distinct shift between the familiar territory of Boudreaux, and the slums of Blood Village. It was enough of a change that Lil Bit wondered if it was worth taking a risk at all.
No matter what, she was still determined to try and find her human. Her need to eat a proper meal, however, was growing urgent. It wouldn't make sense to look for John Smith so far from where he had left her, but the smell of the butcher shop, far away as it was, made Lil Bit question her integrity. If her human passed by and she was nowhere to be found, it would be her fault for leaving. Yet so many others had tried to plant the seeds of doubt into her mind that once in a while, her thoughts ended up wandering back to that possibility. If she had been abandoned, would it matter if she left the area at all?
Deciding to compromise somewhat by vowing to make the trip quick, Lil Bit set off, following her nose. The biggest challenge, of course, was navigating the busy roadways. The first major road she had come across was at grade; eight sprawling lanes with a crumbling concrete median that she easily cleared before safely crossing to the other side. The second major highway proved to be a bit trickier, with the various over passes, underpasses, and ramps. Lil Bit made it underneath a bridge, just off to the side and out of the way of cars. The ground was littered with trash, and it appeared that a human vagrant had taken up camp in one of the far corners of the bridge. Keeping her distance from him, she nervously eyed the traffic, wondering how she was going to make it all the way across without getting run over.
