She had been able to see a sliver of beach from the top of the bluffs. The city sprawled to its edge, overlooking the vast sea that stretched out endlessly into the distance. There was no discernable way down, as far as Lil Bit could tell, so she had spent the overcast day prowling the area, determined to get down into the bay, yet without any plans for what she would do once she got there. Truth be told, the sturdy little cattle dog had not expected to find a way down. Needless to say, she was downright surprised when she found a narrow path that led all the way to the shoreline.
Rather smug, she trotted briskly along the beach, treading carefully over seaweed and tumbled stones, tail swaying in time with her pace. Grinning widely, she slipped her tongue over the edge of her mouth, drawing in the taste of salt on the air. This was her first time on the beach, the first time seeing the ocean for the first time. For a little while, she stood staring out into the open waters, watching clouds pass by overhead, and gulls wheeling in the sky. Sheepishly, she stepped over to the tide, and lowered her head to take a drink.
The punch of salt was hard enough to send her jumping back, a bark of surprize ripping through her throat as her eyes opened wide. While sodium was a wonderful treat where she could get it, she was horrified to discover that in such concentrated levels, it tasted poisonous. Barking fervently, she spun in circles, trying to think of ways to rid the salt from her tongue, but not managing to do much more than tear up the vegetation that feebly clung to the loose sand.
